Kawasaki KZ650 – Cleaning the Cylinder Head Combustion Chambers

I’m back to the KZ650, after being distracted by other projects over the last six months, including the Honda CB750K and a few other diversions I’ll eventually be posting about here.

In any event… the next step for the KZ650 is cleaning the cylinder head combustion chambers in preparation for removing and lapping the valves.  The video below illustrates the cleaning method I used.

    • Fuel is leaking past the carburetor float valves/needles or the float level being too high. There can be several causes of fuel getting past the valves, including dirty carbs, or the valve/needle tips swelling due to modern fuel (if they have soft tips). If you’ve been into the carbs recently, open them up and check the float level. If you believe the float height is correct AND you’ve replaced the needles, try switching back to the originals, if you still have them.

    • Yes you can, though you have to be very careful and deliberate in thoroughly cleaning and removing any media left behind. I wouldn’t use anything too aggressive if I was to use this method. Blast media finds it’s way into everything so even with careful masking and sealing, care needs to be taken clean everything well.
